39. The Epitaph of Tyche
Gallery of the Ancient Art, inv. 142725.
Place and context of the monument discovery remains unknown. The epitaph was bought before 1899, probably on the antiquity market in Paris, for collection of Izabela Działyńska (maiden name Czartoryska). Until Second World War the object was preserved in the Gołuchów palace, then, since year 1948, in the National Museum in Warsaw. Most probably the stone comes from eastern Mediterranean (Syria, Phoenicia, Palestine).
White limestone, heavy weathered block: H. 17 cm, W. 12 cm, Th. 9,2 cm.. Upper left and lower right angles lightly damaged. Lunar letters. H. of the letters 2 cm.
After stone, Froehner, Gołuchów, p. 219, no 37.
Cf. A. Łajtar, ZPE 125, 1999, p. 156, no 42.
